Victoria Day Long Weekend!

May Long Weekend

The second to last monday of May is a Canadian public holiday to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday. This weekend was particuraly nice, with highs in the 70s and super sunny. We decided to do three day trips around Vancouver instead of planning to go to campsites and competing with crowds.  

Saturday: Lighthouse Park Climbing

Saturday we packed up our climbing gear (shoes, harnesses, helmets, anchor supplies, and a rope rented from the VOC) and headed to Lighthouse Park. Lighthouse park is a residential park located in West Vancouver. The drive from our house was ~45 minutes. We hiked into Juniper Point and scouted out the climbing options. We were able to set up a top rope on a cliff right on the ocean. It was such a cool feeling to be climbing over the water :). We climbed a couple of routes and then took a break to dip in the ocean (super cold!) and eat some lunch. In the afternoon, went to the other side of the rock and got some more climbing in. The weather was absolutely amazing and I ended up getting a sunburn (ooops). Definitely will be coming back here to climb! 😍. 

Sunday: Squamish Smoke Bluffs Climbing

On Sunday we picked up a friend to go up to Squamish to climb. We went Smoke Bluffs (see prior blog post about this site), and enjoyed the day climbing some pretty challenging routes. On the drive home we were all wiped out and ordered dominos for dinner hehe. I could really feel the effects of climbing two days in a row. Super tiring. 

Monday: Lynn Canyon Cliff Jumping

On Monday, my bf, my roommate, and a friend, and I went to Lynn Canyon Park. Lynn Canyon is home to a suspension bridge and a deep pool for cliff jumping. Since it was a public holiday, the park was pretty crowded but we managed to find a nice spot on a rock below the cliffs to sunbathe. We jumped into the freezing cold water from a pretty decent sized cliff and enjoyed some pbnjs!!

Sunday: Stanley park strolls and Seymour skiing

A March sunny Sunday in Vancouver means that it’s easy to enjoy the beach and mountains in the same day.   My sister and I took the bus to Stanley park, a huge park in the heart of Vancouver, to enjoy the sun. We walked along the path around the park on the ocean taking in the views of the city, mountains, and ocean. It was an absolutely beautiful day out and a ton of people were out enjoying the sun. We walked about halfway around the peninsula and then turned into the forest to walk through the trees. We ended up walking about 6 miles (way more than we were planning) and it was so worth it. We packed PB&Js and some granola bars and had a nice lunch by the beach. On the bus ride back to my house, we passed the famous Vancouver donut shop, Cartem’s, and had to stop. Co-op in Vancouver!

Hello! I will be working as a research assistant at the Nippon Foundation-University of British Columbia (UBC) Nereus Program ( http://www.nereusprogram.org/ ) until the end of July. I am a 3rd year marine biology student at Northeastern University and this is my first co-op. The delay in the start of my first co-op is due to my participation in Northeastern's Three Seas Program that I just finished last semester. The Three Seas program is a marine biology immersion program where students take classes in the spring at Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA. In the fall, classes are taken at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories in the San Juan Islands, WA  and then at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The program was an amazing experience and exposed me to the marine beauty and complexity of the Pacific Northwest! Casey comes to visit!

Helloo again! My friend Casey from Northeastern visited me this week for her spring break :)  While I was at work, she spent the day exploring the city. She visited Granville Island market, Lynn suspension bridge, and Stanley Park, all places I have yet to visit, but definitely will put on the to do list after her positive reviews. "I had a nice time"- Casey Josephine Ross.  Casey on a solo trip to Lynn Canyon suspension bridge I gave Casey a tour of UBC, which included a walk down to Wreck Beach At night we went to Grouse mountain to ski! There was a ton of snow and it was super fun. There are three mountains that offer night skiing within an hour of Vancouver and Grouse is accessible by public transportation. This was my first time night skiing in Vancouver and I definitely plan on going more in the upcoming weeks. The skiing is so accessible and the mountain offers great conditions.
